KINETIC AND EQUILIBRIUM STUDIES FOR THE REMOVAL OF NI (II) FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTION USING HAEMATITE AS LOW COST ADSORBENT BY BATCH ADSORPTION TECHNIQUE

ABSTRACT
Heavy metals are discharged into water from various industries. They can be toxic or carcinogenic in nature and
can cause severe problems for humans and aquatic ecosystems. Thus, the removal of heavy metals from wastewater
is a serious problem. The adsorption process is widely used for the removal of heavy metals from wastewater
because of its low cost, availability and eco-friendly nature. In this study, an attempt has been made to investigate
the efficiency of Haematite as an adsorbent for removal of Ni (II). The Haematite has been collected from
Noamundi Mine, Bihar (India). Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to study effect of temperature.
Thermodynamic parameters, equilibrium isotherms, and kinetic data have been evaluated. Adsorption equilibrium
isotherms were expressed by Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption Isotherms and it was found that Langmuir
adsorption fits the experimental data. The adsorption followed first order rate kinetics and the rate is mainly
depends on intra-particle diffusion.
