IN-VITRO ANTI-ARTHRITIC ACTIVITY OF WHOLE PLANT OF EPIPREMNUM AUREUM (LINDEN & ANDRE) G.S. BUNTING

ABSTRACT
The plant Epipremnum aureum (Linden & Andre) G.S Bunting is a perennial, evergreen, climbing vine belongs to
the family Araceae. In the present study, pharmacognostical, phytochemical constituents and in vitro anti-arthritic
potential of whole plant of Epipremnum aureum were evaluated. Pharmacognostical evaluation included
macroscopic, microscopic and physicochemical evaluation. Ethanol (EEEA) and water (AEEA) were used as
solvent for extraction. Preliminary phytochemical screening was done by performing different chemical tests and
glycosides, alkaloids, flavonoids, carbohydrate and phenolic compounds were present. The in-vitro anti-arthritic
potential was evaluated using heat induced Bovine Serum protein denaturation method and Egg Albumin
denaturation method. The activity of both of the plant extract was compared with standard anti-inflammatory drug
Diclofenac. In the result it was found that the EEEA and AEEA of the plant showed significant reduction in
protein denaturation. EEEA at concentration of 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 μg/ml showed 92.22%,93.95%,
95.29%, 96.52% and 97.02% inhibition respectively, whereas AEEA showed 96.52%,97.03%, 97.54%, 97.85% and
98.26% inhibition. In egg albumin denaturation method at 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 μg/ml EEEA showed
18.10%, 24.15%, 40.83%, 53.78% and 67.85respectively. Similarly, the AEEA showed % inhibition as 19.01%,
24.65%, 37.33%, 56.48% and 69.61%. The results reveal promising anti arthritic potential of the plant. However
further pharmacological investigation using isolated active ingredients can be carried out to confirm its efficacy and
mechanism of action and can result in an eco-friendly cost effective antiarthritic herbal drug with anti-inflammatory
potential contributing towards the better healthcare of human society.
