A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW ON SELF DOUBLE EMULSIFYING DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM (SDEDDS)

ABSTRACT

Self-double-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SDEDDS) are novel formulation systems. This is a colloidal system where a primary water-in-oil emulsion is formed with lipophilic surfactants and dispersed in an aqueous phase containing hydrophilic surfactants. These are lipid-based formulations. A self-emulsifying drug delivery system (SEDDS) is used to deliver poorly aqueous-soluble drugs with dissolution-limited absorption. Double emulsions are reported to have good oral bioavailability for drugs with high solubility and low permeability (BCS class III). It enhances the oral bioavailability of drugs. The SDEDDS system is used to deliver drugs through the oral route. This review discusses the construction of a pseudo-ternary phase diagram, composition, methods of preparation, and characterization of SDEDDS in brief.
