EFFECTS OF TRIGGER POINT BLOCK ON NECK-SHOULDER PAIN AFTER CERVICAL LAMINOPLASTY: A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY

ABSTRACT

Background: Patients received cervical laminoplasty often complain neck and/or shoulder pain in early postoperative period. This study was performed to investigate the analgesic effect of trigger point block on neck and/or shoulder pain after cervical laminoplasty, retrospectively. Methods: One hundred and seventy one patients who had neck and/or shoulder pain on the next day of cervical laminectomy of C2-C7 were involved in this study. For 97 patients, trigger point block was performed with 1% lidocaine 5 mL per one side after surgery (Block group). For 74 patients nothing was done for neck and/or shoulder pain (Control group). Visual analogue scale (VAS) for neck and/or shoulder pain was compared for 48 hours between the two groups. Results: VAS of neck and/or shoulder pain from 1 to 48 hours in the Block group was significantly lower than those in the Control group. Conclusions: Trigger point block was effective for neck and shoulder pain occurred several hours after cervical laminoplasty.
