ABSTRACT
Introduction: Abnormal Uterine Bleeding (AUB) is a diagnosis of exclusion made when there is no recognizable medical cause. In June 2011, International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) gave PALMCOEIN classification for causes of AUB in non-gravid women in reproductive age groups. Present study was undertaken to critically evaluate the significance of p16 and p53 as diagnostic and prognostic markers in endometrial diseases. Materials and Methods: This prospective study was conducted in the Department of Pathology in a tertiary care hospital in northern part of India. Fifty cases of endometrial biopsy and hysterectomy specimens of patients >35 years of age with diagnosis of abnormal uterine bleeding were taken and ihc for p16 and p53 applied. The results were tabulated and statistical analysis done. Results: p16 and p53 were studies for their positive/ negative expression as well as intensity in benign, premalignant and malignant lesions of the endometrium and p-values were calculated for the same. Comparison with the findings of other similar studies was done. Conclusion: Our study questions the relevant specificity of these markers in patients presenting with AUB. Further studies have to be conducted on a larger scale to assess the actual role of expression of these markers in endometrial carcinogenesis in the population and to explore the possibility of using these as novel prognostic and predictive markers of malignancy.
