ABSTRACT

Knowing the molecular features of breast cancer is crucial for developing individualised treatment plans for this devastating disease. Using tissue samples from patients diagnosed with breast cancer at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital in Okolobiri and the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa, this study compares the immunohistochemical expression of Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor type 2 (HER2) and Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR). Seventy-five breast cancer patients' samples were analysed. Tumour samples were analysed for EGFR and HER2+ expression using immunohistochemistry. Immunohistochemical analysis of breast cancer samples showed no connection between EGFR and Her2 expression. Even while Her2 was significantly associated with stage II breast cancer patients, it was not significantly associated with tumour grade, stage, or hormone receptor status (p 0.05). In conclusion, the expression of HER2+ and EGFR was not significantly linked in this research of women with breast cancer in Bayelsa State. These results help fill in the gaps in our knowledge of the molecular subtypes of breast cancer that are most common in this area, which might lead to more effective targeted therapy strategies. To further understand the processes and possible therapeutic consequences of this non-co-expression pattern, it is advised that additional research be conducted on a larger sample size.

Keywords: Her2, EGFR, Breast cancer, Immunohistochemical, Tumor stage, tumor grade.
